Sophia Martine Art

The title ‘And I Ran’ comes from a journal entry where I detail feelings of empowerment after deciding against getting surgery. The flowing form was inspired by Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa and the mache texture was drawn from Magdalena Abakanowicz. I used a repeated doctors note for the shell as an act of reclamation. I cut open the figure and painted the inside red to signify breaking free. Lastly, I suspended the structure to create the impression of floating and freedom.
